Houston, TX – A significant drop in temperatures is forecast this week across the Houston area, with sub-freezing conditions expected Friday morning. Residents in northern areas, such as Huntsville and Crockett, should prepare for lows in the 20s, posing risks to outdoor plants and exposed pipes.
According to the National Weather Service Houston-Galveston office, Wednesday will remain seasonably cool with highs in the mid-50s across much of the region. Overnight, onshore winds will push warmer air into coastal areas, keeping places like Galveston and Lake Jackson in the 50s. However, colder air will begin sweeping southward late Thursday night, bringing a sharp temperature drop into Friday morning.
Rain is possible tonight, particularly along Matagorda Bay and coastal areas, where up to 30% rain chances could dampen commutes. The front’s arrival may also create slick conditions on roads, so drivers should use caution.
By Friday morning, widespread freezing temperatures are forecast across northern counties, with Crockett, Huntsville, and Livingston seeing lows between 28–32 degrees. Urban areas like Houston may avoid freezing, but conditions will feel colder due to strong winds.
The weekend offers some relief, with sunny skies and highs in the upper 50s expected Saturday and Sunday. Residents are advised to insulate pipes, cover sensitive plants, and monitor pets closely in preparation for the freeze.
