Indianapolis, IN – Central Indiana is gearing up for the hottest temperatures of the year, expected to peak on Friday and Saturday. According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Indianapolis, afternoon highs will reach the mid-90s, with heat indices soaring above 100 degrees.
The NWS warns that this extreme heat can pose serious health risks. “We urge residents to stay hydrated, take frequent breaks indoors, and avoid prolonged exposure to the sun,” stated a spokesperson from the NWS. Additionally, they emphasize the importance of never leaving pets or children in cars, as temperatures inside vehicles can quickly become lethal.
The forecast for Thursday predicts highs between 90 and 94 degrees with a heat index peaking at 98. On Friday, temperatures will range from 93 to 96 degrees, with a maximum heat index of 102. Saturday will be similarly hot, with highs again in the mid-90s and the heat index reaching 103 degrees.
The NWS has provided several safety tips to help residents cope with the sweltering heat. These include staying indoors during the hottest parts of the day, drinking plenty of water, and checking on vulnerable neighbors and family members.
