LEWISBURG, W.Va. – Clear skies and calm winds will set the stage for a cold, frosty night across the Allegheny Highlands overnight tonight, from 2AM until 9AM Friday, with temperatures dipping to around 30 degrees by dawn.
According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, a Frost Advisory is in effect for Bath County, Virginia, and Eastern and Western Greenbrier counties, West Virginia, including the cities of Lewisburg, Alderson, Rainelle, Quinwood, and Hot Springs. The coldest air will settle into sheltered valleys and higher mountain hollows, where frost is likely to be widespread.
Forecasters warn that frost could damage or kill sensitive outdoor vegetation if left uncovered. Residents should bring plants indoors, cover garden beds, and protect outdoor plumbing ahead of the chill. Pet owners are also urged to bring animals indoors during the coldest hours before sunrise.
According to meteorologists, this will be the first widespread frost of the season for portions of southeastern West Virginia and western Virginia. Drivers may encounter frosted windshields and slippery bridges early Friday, especially along U.S. 60, I-64, and Route 220.
Temperatures will rebound quickly under bright sunshine Friday, ushering in a pleasant afternoon. Another light frost is possible in rural valleys early next week as the region stays locked in a cool fall pattern.
