Sioux Falls, SD – Unseasonably hot weather will grip South Dakota again Saturday, with highs expected in the upper-80s to low-90s. The National Weather Service (NWS) warns the combination of heat, dry conditions, and strong winds will create an elevated risk for wildfires.

According to the NWS Sioux Falls office, wind gusts are forecast to peak between 35 and 45 mph, with some areas potentially seeing gusts up to 50 mph. Combined with humidity levels near 20% and very dry grass conditions, forecasters caution that any spark could spread rapidly.

Saturday’s forecast includes high temperatures of 92°F in Sioux Falls, Mitchell, and Yankton, with widespread 90-degree readings across much of the state. The NWS advises residents to stay hydrated, take breaks if working outdoors, and wear light clothing to avoid heat-related illnesses.

Fire safety reminders are also being emphasized. The NWS urges residents not to burn debris, be cautious with farm equipment, and avoid throwing cigarette butts outside. Loose trailer chains and equipment should also be checked, as sparks from dragging metal can ignite grass fires.

While the weekend will remain hot, forecasters note that cooler weather is expected to return by early next week.
