Atlanta, Georgia – Scorching heat and dangerous storms are set to hit metro Atlanta and much of central Georgia Friday, sending heat indices soaring past 105 degrees and bringing the threat of severe thunderstorms and heavy rain through Monday.
According to the National Weather Service in Peachtree City, the hottest stretch will occur Friday between noon and 8 p.m., with afternoon and evening storms likely across Fulton, DeKalb, Clayton, and Cobb counties. Some of these storms could pack wind gusts up to 60 mph, causing power outages and downed trees. A renewed round of thunderstorms and showers is expected from Friday night through at least Wednesday, with the risk of localized flooding increasing early next week as some areas could see more than 3 inches of rain.
Commuters on I-75, I-20, and I-285 should be alert for sudden downpours and possible ponding. Residents in low-lying neighborhoods, especially near Peachtree Creek and Nancy Creek, are urged to monitor weather alerts and avoid travel during intense storms. Prepare now by charging electronic devices, clearing storm drains, and planning alternate routes for commutes or errands.
This early August weather pattern marks one of the hottest stretches this summer for Atlanta, comparable to last year’s July heat wave. Showers and storm threats will persist through midweek, with more updates likely if additional warnings are issued.
