Hot and Humid in Vermont: Heat Index Near 100° Hits Burlington and Middlebury Through 8 PM

Burlington, Vermont – Sweltering heat and humidity are gripping Vermont today, with highs soaring into the upper 80s and mid 90s across the state. Residents from Burlington to Rutland are urged to take extra care as a Heat Advisory remains in effect until 8 p.m., especially in the Champlain and Upper Valley regions.

According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, heat index values will climb into the upper 80s to upper 90s through early evening, pushing “feels like” temperatures near dangerous levels. The hottest conditions are expected between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m., especially in cities like Middlebury, Burlington, and areas south toward Rutland.

Officials recommend staying hydrated, limiting strenuous activities during peak heat, and checking on vulnerable neighbors. Power companies and health agencies across Vermont have activated safety reminders, urging residents to use air conditioning, close curtains, and never leave children or pets in vehicles.

Some cooling centers have opened in Burlington and Rutland as a precaution. Today’s heat is the first major spell of the summer, following cooler-than-average June temperatures in the region.
