Springfield, IL – Hot and humid conditions are set to dominate Central Illinois starting Sunday afternoon. A heat advisory is in effect through Monday, with heat index values expected to reach between 100 to 110 degrees during the afternoons. Nighttime temperatures will only drop to the 75-80 degree range.
The US National Weather Service Central Illinois reports that the heat advisory could extend into Tuesday, particularly south of I-72, depending on the track of thunderstorms expected to hit northern areas Monday night. Residents should take precautions by wearing lightweight, light-colored clothing and scheduling outdoor activities for early morning or late evening hours.
Thunderstorm clusters are predicted to move southeast from the Upper Midwest on Monday night. These storms could bring damaging wind gusts and isolated hail, with the highest risk from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. Monday night.
Looking ahead, the heat and humidity will persist into Tuesday, especially south of I-70. Thunderstorm complexes will bring periodic storm chances, with the most significant storm coverage anticipated on Tuesday as a cold front moves through. Temperatures on Tuesday are expected to range from 87 to 95 degrees.
By Wednesday, temperatures will cool slightly, with highs ranging from 80 to 84 degrees. The rest of the week will see a gradual decrease in temperatures, with highs in the mid-70s by Thursday and lower humidity levels. Residents are advised to stay hydrated, use air conditioning, and limit outdoor activities during peak heat hours to mitigate health risks.
