Honolulu, Hawaii – Strong winds and heavy rainfall this weekend are expected to disrupt travel, power, and daily activity across Oahu, especially near major roadways.

According to the U.S. National Weather Service Honolulu and Central Pacific Hurricane Center, a cold front moving through the state will combine with increasing moisture to bring a heightened risk of flash flooding and damaging winds from Saturday afternoon through Monday. A Flood Watch is in effect, with the greatest concern focused on windward and mauka areas.

Forecasters say heavy rain may cause flooding of low-lying areas, streams, and roadways, including stretches near Interstate H-1, H-2, and H-3. Urban locations may experience faster runoff, increasing the risk of roadway ponding and temporary closures during heavier downpours.

Behind the front, breezy north to northeasterly winds are expected to strengthen late Sunday. The National Weather Service warns that sustained winds above 30 mph are likely, with peak gusts exceeding 60 mph possible Sunday afternoon and evening. The strongest gusts are expected downwind of terrain, which may affect exposed corridors and elevated roadways.

The Honolulu Department of Emergency Management cautioned that the combination of high winds and saturated ground could lead to power outages. Residents are urged to secure loose outdoor items and prepare for possible electricity disruptions.

Drivers in high-profile vehicles may encounter hazardous conditions, particularly during Sunday evening travel. Street flooding and reduced visibility could impact commuters and service workers returning home during overnight hours.

Officials recommend monitoring official weather updates, limiting non-essential travel during peak conditions, and signing up for local emergency alerts to receive real-time notifications as conditions evolve.
