HOLLISTER, Calif. – A light earthquake was recorded beneath the hills south of Dinosaur Lake late Sunday morning, gently shaking parts of central California near the San Luis Reservoir and Pacheco State Park. The U.S. Geological Survey reported the magnitude 2.5 quake struck at 6:37 a.m. local time, about 27 kilometers northeast of Hollister at a depth of nearly 40 kilometers.

According to the California Integrated Seismic Network, no damage or injuries have been reported, and the tremor was likely too weak to be widely felt beyond the immediate area near the San Luis Reservoir State Recreation Area.

Minor quakes like Sunday’s are common along the region’s intricate network of faults between the Diablo Range and the Central Valley. While not strong enough to cause structural harm, seismologists note such activity helps release built-up stress in the Earth’s crust.

Local emergency managers advise residents to review earthquake preparedness kits and secure heavy items in homes, particularly in older structures near Hollister and Los Banos.

No aftershocks have been detected, though monitoring will continue through the week.
