Springfield, IL – Illinois officials are urging residents to inspect and replace outdated or non-functional smoke alarms as the holiday season increases fire risks.

According to the Illinois State Fire Marshal, holiday decorations, often made of flammable materials, can significantly elevate the likelihood of house fires. Alarms older than 10 years or those not functioning properly should be replaced immediately. Testing smoke alarms regularly by pressing the test button ensures they are in working order.

The Fire Marshal emphasized the importance of fire safety during December, noting that homes filled with festive lighting and ornaments are at a higher risk. Residents are encouraged to prioritize their safety by ensuring all smoke alarms are operational throughout the home.
