Holbrook, AZ – Drivers traveling along Interstate 40 near the Petrified Forest National Park can expect a smoother ride after the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) completed a $30 million pavement rehabilitation project.

According to ADOT, crews worked with the Navajo Nation to repave a 12-mile section of the interstate between mileposts 319 and 331, removing the top pavement layer and applying a fresh asphalt mix to improve traction and durability. The project also included new guardrails, drainage upgrades, pavement markers, and striping.

Crews additionally replaced the eastbound Dead River Bridge deck and superstructure at milepost 316 to improve the bridge’s lifespan and safety.

The effort is part of ADOT’s ongoing commitment to maintain I-40 as a key east-west corridor for both freight and travelers. So far this year, the agency has completed or begun five major rehabilitation projects along I-40, covering 57 miles of pavement improvements and four bridge repairs—representing a total investment exceeding $160 million.
