Quad Cities, IA/IL — A powerful and long-lasting winter storm brought widespread heavy snow to eastern Iowa and northwest Illinois Friday night through Saturday, producing totals of 8 inches or more across nearly the entire region, according to the National Weather Service in the Quad Cities. Numerous communities reported well over a foot of snow, making this likely to become one of the highest-impact November snow events on record for the area.

Preliminary snowfall reports show some of the highest totals in:

  • Lowden, IA – 13.5 inches
  • Hazleton, IA – 13.5 inches
  • Jesup, IA – 13.3 inches
  • Fairfax, IA – 13.0 inches
  • Asbury, IA – 12.5 inches
  • Hopkinton, IA – 12.5 inches
  • Dubuque Airport – 11.7 inches
  • Quad City Airport – 9.2 inches

The widespread heavy snow significantly impacted post-Thanksgiving travel, contributing to numerous accidents, spinouts, and road closures. Officials reported several jackknifed semi-trailers along both Interstate 80 and Interstate 74 during the height of the storm.

Forecasters say the region will continue analyzing storm data in the coming days, but early indications suggest this event will rank among the heaviest November snow episodes ever observed across portions of eastern Iowa.
