Tampa, Florida – A street takeover in northwest Hillsborough County early Saturday prompted arrests after deputies used a Grappler to stop a fleeing vehicle.
According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred March 21 at approximately 1:19 a.m. near Benjamin Road and Barry Road, where a 19-year-old driver was allegedly performing donuts and burnouts, blocking active traffic.
Deputies responding to the scene said the driver fled upon arrival, allegedly driving into oncoming traffic and nearly striking pedestrians. Authorities deployed a Grappler device, which safely disabled the vehicle and brought the pursuit to an end.
The driver, identified as Calixto Gabriel Anaya, 19, was arrested and faces charges including street takeover participation, reckless driving, and felony fleeing to elude, according to HCSO.
A passenger, identified as Kierstin Mckenzie Robb, 17, was also arrested and charged with drug possession and carrying a firearm, authorities said.
“Street takeovers are dangerous, reckless, and put innocent lives at risk,” Sheriff Chad Chronister said in a statement, adding that deputies acted quickly to prevent serious injuries.
The intersection was temporarily impacted during the response, though no injuries were reported.
Street takeovers have become a growing enforcement focus across the region, with officials warning of increased patrols and penalties. The incident may be particularly relevant for late-night commuters and young drivers in the Tampa area.
