Tampa, Florida – A 46-year-old man received a 10-year sentence in a Hillsborough County fentanyl case.

According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, Daniel Shaffer was arrested in October 2022 after he allegedly sold fentanyl to undercover detectives during an investigation.

On Monday, Shaffer was sentenced to 10 years in prison for delivery of a controlled substance and five years for possession of a controlled substance. Authorities said the sentences will be served concurrently, resulting in a total of 10 years on those charges.

The sheriff’s office also stated that Shaffer is serving an additional 20-year prison sentence for previous convictions. Officials did not immediately clarify whether that term will run consecutively to the new sentence.

“Fentanyl continues to devastate families in our community, and we will not tolerate those who profit from pushing this poison into our neighborhoods,” Sheriff Chad Chronister said in a statement released by the agency.

Investigators said the case stemmed from a targeted operation focused on illegal narcotics sales within the county. Court records show the arrest occurred during an undercover transaction involving detectives.

Fentanyl, a synthetic opioid significantly more potent than morphine, has been linked to rising overdose deaths statewide and nationally. Law enforcement agencies across Florida have increased enforcement efforts targeting suppliers and distributors.

Drug-related convictions and prison sentences can carry long-term consequences for employment and education opportunities, particularly affecting young adults entering the workforce.

The case remains closed following sentencing.
