Asheville, NC – The National Weather Service (NWS) in Greenville-Spartanburg has issued a Wind Advisory for Western North Carolina’s high elevations, warning of gusts up to 50 mph from Sunday evening through early Monday morning.

The advisory includes Avery, Buncombe, Mitchell, and Yancey counties, primarily for elevations above 3,500 feet, including areas near Mount Mitchell, Newland, Banner Elk, and Burnsville.

According to forecasters, northwest winds of 15 to 25 mph will strengthen after sunset, peaking overnight before easing by dawn Monday. The strongest gusts are expected along ridgelines and mountain gaps.

The NWS cautions that unsecured outdoor objects may be blown around, and tree limbs could break, potentially leading to isolated power outages. Drivers of high-profile vehicles are urged to use extra caution on mountain roads and parkways, particularly along the Blue Ridge Parkway and U.S. Route 19E.

Residents are advised to secure outdoor furniture, decorations, and trash bins and stay alert for changing weather conditions. Winds are expected to gradually subside by sunrise Monday as high pressure builds into the region.
