Eureka, CA – Residents of Del Norte, Humboldt, and Mendocino counties should prepare for severe coastal conditions as high winds and strong surf hit the region this week. On Wednesday, gusts up to 45 mph are forecast, particularly in wind-exposed areas, posing a risk for power outages, fallen tree limbs, and hazardous driving conditions. A high surf advisory remains in effect until 8 p.m. Tuesday, with waves potentially reaching 21 feet along west- and northwest-facing beaches.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) Eureka office, winds will peak early Wednesday morning, with south-to-southeast gusts ranging from 35 to 45 mph. Areas like Crescent City and Fortuna are expected to experience the strongest winds along exposed ridges and coastal headlands. The NWS warns that these conditions may cause loose objects to become projectiles, increase the likelihood of power outages, and create hazardous driving situations for high-profile vehicles.

Residents should avoid coastal areas through Tuesday, as the surf advisory highlights risks of large waves and powerful currents. NWS recommends staying off rocks, jetties, and steep beaches, where rogue waves may unexpectedly reach further inland. Those near the coast are urged to stay vigilant and avoid turning their backs on the ocean.

The extended forecast for the Eureka area includes showers and thunderstorms through Thursday, with temperatures ranging from lows in the mid-40s to highs in the low 50s. Gusty conditions may persist into Thursday morning, but calmer weather is expected by Friday.
