Reno, Nevada – Strong southwest winds are expected to whip through northern Nevada until 5 p.m. Monday, posing risks to power lines, tree limbs, and drivers across the Reno-Carson region.
According to the National Weather Service in Reno, sustained winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph are likely, while wind-prone areas—especially near Virginia City and Verdi—could see gusts reach 65 mph. The advisory, issued late Sunday, warns of hazardous travel for high-profile vehicles and the potential for scattered power outages.
Cities including Sparks, Gardnerville, and Minden will feel the brunt of the wind surge, particularly by mid-morning Monday as a brief overnight lull gives way to stronger gusts. Fire-scarred areas near the Davis Fire zone may see additional tree damage due to loosened root systems.
Officials urge residents to secure outdoor items like patio furniture and trash cans, and to prepare for possible outages by charging devices and keeping water and flashlights on hand. Travel should be limited during peak wind hours, especially for large vehicles on I-580 and U.S. 395.
The advisory remains active until 5 p.m. Monday, with winds expected to ease into the evening. Further updates may follow if conditions worsen.
