Reno, NV – The high desert won’t stay quiet for long. Flags snap, trees bend, and clouds rip across the Sierra front as Nevada braces for a dangerous High Wind Warning stretching from early Wednesday morning through late Wednesday night.

The National Weather Service in Reno warns that southwest winds will roar to 35–45 mph with gusts up to 65 mph in valley locations. Exposed ridges along U.S. 395 and the Sierra Crest could see gusts topping 80 to 110 mph, powerful enough to topple trees, damage roofs, and knock out power lines. Travel will be hazardous for trucks, RVs, and trailers — particularly between Reno, Minden, and Bridgeport.

Residents should secure loose outdoor items, from trash bins and patio furniture to early holiday decorations, before the winds peak. Experts also advise keeping flashlights, extra batteries, and water on hand in case of outages.

A few showers may accompany the wind Wednesday afternoon, with snow levels near 7,800 feet dropping toward 7,000 feet by evening — a hint of early winter air pushing in behind the front. Thursday turns calmer and cooler, with highs near 60°F and clear skies.

Looking ahead, the Veterans Day weekend appears mostly sunny but cooler, with lows dipping into the 30s. Still, this midweek wind event serves as a reminder of November’s volatility — calm one day, chaotic the next — as the region transitions into winter’s doorstep.
