Reno, NV – Northern Nevada residents can expect strong winds, rain, and even some snow as St. Patrick’s Day kicks off an unsettled weather pattern. A High Wind Warning remains in effect from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday, with gusts up to 65 mph, creating hazardous travel conditions.

According to the National Weather Service in Reno, rain will begin late Sunday night, transitioning to a rain-snow mix by early Monday. Areas above 6,500 feet may see accumulating snow, while lower elevations remain mostly rainy and windy. Winds will be strongest in exposed areas, particularly Pyramid Lake and the Western Nevada Basin, where gusts could reach 70 mph.

Residents should secure loose outdoor items and prepare for potential power outages. High-profile vehicles, especially on Interstate 80 and U.S. Highway 395, may experience dangerous crosswinds. Reduced visibility due to blowing dust is also a concern in open desert areas.

Looking ahead, conditions will improve by Tuesday, with sunny skies and highs near 48°F. Wednesday brings mild temperatures in the upper 50s, but another chance of rain-snow showers returns Wednesday night. Spring officially arrives on Thursday, March 20, with mostly sunny skies and highs near 57°F through the weekend.
