Kansas City, MO – A High Wind Warning is in effect for eastern Kansas and western Missouri from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. CDT Friday, with powerful gusts expected to impact the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Kansas City/Pleasant Hill, sustained south winds of 30 to 40 mph with gusts reaching up to 60 mph will affect areas including Kansas City, Overland Park, Olathe, Leavenworth, Independence, and Sedalia. The warning also extends to Atchison and Doniphan counties in Kansas, as well as Buchanan and Clinton counties in Missouri, where gusts could reach 55 mph.
The high winds pose significant hazards, including downed trees and power lines, which may lead to widespread power outages. Travel will be particularly hazardous for high-profile vehicles such as trucks, trailers, and RVs.
Residents are advised to secure loose outdoor objects, remain indoors when possible, and stay away from windows during peak wind periods. If traveling is necessary, drivers should exercise caution, especially on open roads and bridges where wind gusts can be strongest.
The National Weather Service urges residents to stay informed through local updates and to report any storm-related damage to authorities. Conditions are expected to improve later in the evening as winds gradually subside.
