Berrien County, MI – Visitors to southeast Lake Michigan beaches are urged to exercise extreme caution tomorrow, June 23rd, due to a high swim risk. Beaches in Berrien County, Michigan, are expected to face life-threatening waves and dangerous currents. Residents and tourists alike are advised to stay off the pier and out of the water.

According to the U.S. National Weather Service Northern Indiana, waves reaching 3-4+ feet and strong currents are anticipated throughout the day on Sunday. La Porte County, Indiana, beaches will also experience moderate swim risk conditions. The combination of high winds from the northwest, ranging from 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 30 mph, and significant wave activity poses a substantial threat to beachgoers.

Swim risk classifications are used to highlight areas where hazardous conditions, including rip currents and large waves, could lead to dangerous situations. The warning underscores the importance of heeding lifeguard instructions and avoiding risky areas, especially piers and breakwalls, which can exacerbate wave action and currents.

Beachgoers are reminded to check current conditions before heading out and to prioritize safety by wearing life jackets and swimming only in designated safe areas. For more information on beach hazards and safety tips, visit www.weather.gov/greatlakes/beachhazards.
