Charleston, SC – Beachgoers across Southeast South Carolina and Southeast Georgia are being urged to use extreme caution today, as the National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a high rip current risk for all beaches in the region.

According to the US National Weather Service Charleston office, the alert applies throughout Thursday, October 2, 2025. Rip currents are powerful channels of water that can quickly pull swimmers away from shore, making them especially hazardous during peak surf conditions.

NWS officials stressed that swimmers should not panic if caught in a rip current. Instead, safety guidance advises swimming along the shoreline rather than directly toward the beach. Once out of the current, swimmers should angle back toward shore. If escape is not possible, officials recommend treading water and signaling for help.

The elevated risk comes as strong onshore winds and wave activity impact the coastal areas, making the surf zone particularly dangerous. Authorities recommend that inexperienced swimmers and families with children avoid entering the ocean today.

Local lifeguards and emergency services will be on heightened alert, but officials emphasize that prevention is the safest course. “If in doubt, don’t go out,” the NWS cautioned.

Residents and visitors to Charleston, Savannah, Hilton Head, and other coastal destinations are advised to monitor updates throughout the day.
