Rapid City, SD – A critical fire weather alert has been issued for Northwest Nebraska and Western South Dakota today. The National Weather Service (NWS) is warning residents of strong winds and dry conditions that could rapidly spread any fires.
The NWS reports that winds will strengthen throughout the day, reaching speeds of 20-25 mph, with gusts up to 35 mph. These winds, combined with low relative humidity levels in the teens, create a high risk of fire.
The region has experienced dry conditions over the past few days, further heightening the fire danger. Fire officials are urging caution, especially in areas where fuels are already dry.
Residents are advised to avoid activities that could lead to fires and to follow local fire restrictions. The critical conditions are expected to persist through the day, with authorities keeping a close watch on the situation.
