Brooksville, FL – Two drivers were arrested Thursday afternoon after allegedly racing at more than 100 mph through an active school zone on Powell Road, according to the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies said the incident happened November 6, 2025, when a traffic unit observed two vehicles traveling eastbound at 101 mph in a 55 mph zone near Spring Parkway. A school crossing guard reportedly had to stop children from crossing the street as the cars sped past.

According to the sheriff’s office, the drivers — identified as Dakota Turner, 27, of a Ford Mustang, and Travis Kirkman, 34, a registered sexual offender driving a Volkswagen — were both arrested for wanton and reckless disregard for persons and property under Florida’s Racing Statute.

Officials said both vehicles were impounded. Kirkman was held without bond due to his offender status, while Turner was released on a $2,000 bond.

Deputies added that Kirkman’s wife arrived at the scene and became verbally confrontational, accusing officers of “wasting taxpayer dollars.”

Authorities credited the school crossing guard’s quick actions for preventing possible injuries. “Protecting our students and community is never a waste of taxpayer dollars,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement.
