Brooksville, Florida – The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about renewed reports of door-to-door driveway paving scams targeting homeowners across the county.
According to a notice issued Wednesday, individuals posing as asphalt contractors are offering driveway or parking lot paving at unusually low prices, often claiming they have leftover materials from a nearby job. Authorities say the workers allegedly provide only verbal estimates, complete the work, and then demand significantly higher payments than originally discussed.
In some cases, the final invoice has reportedly been thousands of dollars more than the quoted amount. Deputies said some individuals may become aggressive, pressure homeowners for immediate payment, or threaten legal action after the work is finished.
Investigators noted that some of the companies involved operate from outside Florida and avoid giving clear pricing details or written contracts before beginning work. While these pavers may not require upfront deposits, legitimate contractors typically provide written estimates and agreements in advance.
Residents are advised to be cautious of unsolicited offers, claims of discounted leftover materials, refusal to provide firm pricing, and pressure for same-day service.
The Sheriff’s Office recommends researching local companies, obtaining multiple written estimates, verifying licenses through the Hernando County Building Department, and checking complaints with the Better Business Bureau. Officials also encourage using payment methods that create a transaction record rather than paying in cash.
Authorities urge residents—particularly elderly homeowners, who are often targeted—to report suspected scams to the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office at 352-754-6830.
