Spring Hill, Florida – Hernando County deputies removed 31 cats from a vacant Spring Hill home after unsafe ammonia levels were discovered inside the property.
According to the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded Sunday, Jan. 26, to a residence in the 6400 block of Spring Hill Drive after receiving reports that numerous cats had been left inside a foreclosed home.
Authorities said the house had been without power or water since 2024. Deputies encountered what officials described as extremely unsafe living conditions, including high ammonia levels and accumulated waste. Personnel were required to wear protective equipment before entering the property.
A total of 31 adult cats were safely removed from the residence.
The Sheriff’s Office said the animals were medically evaluated by Shelter Veterinarian Dr. Bogart. Officials reported the cats were treated for upper respiratory infections and eye conditions, vaccinated, and sterilized. One cat underwent surgery to remove a severely damaged eye.
All 31 cats have since been transferred to approved rescue organizations, where they are expected to continue recovery and be placed for adoption.
Authorities did not release information about how long the animals had been inside the home or whether any charges are pending.
The rescue effort involved deputies and Animal Enforcement Officers, according to the agency.
