Herkimer, NY – A strong winter storm continues to impact Northern Herkimer County today, bringing moderate to heavy snow, reduced visibility and hazardous travel conditions through 7 p.m. Monday.

According to the National Weather Service in Albany, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect as steady snowfall persists through this morning before gradually tapering off this afternoon and evening. Total accumulations of 7 to 14 inches are still expected, especially for locations near and north of Route 28, including Old Forge, Eagle Bay, Big Moose and surrounding communities.

Roads across the region are becoming slick as snowfall rates increase, and forecasters warn that visibility may drop below 1 mile at times due to heavier bursts of snow and occasional blowing snow. The combination of falling snow and gusty winds will make travel difficult, particularly for those driving during the morning hours.

Conditions may improve later in the day as snowfall lightens, but untreated roads and mountain routes will remain hazardous into the evening. Residents should plan for extra travel time and use caution on bridges, hills and shaded areas where ice may form.

The NWS advises anyone who must travel to keep emergency supplies in their vehicle, including food, water and a flashlight. Drivers are also encouraged to monitor updated forecasts and heed local advisories as conditions may change quickly, especially in higher elevations.
