Henry County, IN – A Cadiz Police officer was seriously injured early Sunday morning after being struck while outside his patrol vehicle on State Road 38, according to Indiana State Police.

Troopers say the crash happened around 6:50 a.m. near Mechanicsburg Road, when emergency crews were dispatched to a collision involving a marked Cadiz Police vehicle and a 2019 Toyota Rav 4 driven by Amanda Bailey, 44, of New Castle.

According to the preliminary investigation, Officer Douglas Barker Jr. had stopped on the roadside for reasons not yet disclosed when Bailey’s vehicle struck the rear of the police car. Barker, who was standing outside at the time, sustained serious injuries and was flown by medical helicopter to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, where he remains in stable condition.

Bailey was taken by ambulance to Ball Memorial Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

State Road 38 was closed for about four hours as investigators and cleanup crews cleared debris and documented the scene. Multiple agencies responded, including the Henry County Sheriff’s Department, New Castle EMS, Cadiz Volunteer Fire Department, and Affordable Towing.

The crash remains under investigation by the Indiana State Police Crash Reconstruction Team.
