Oquawka, IL – A domestic battery call involving a barricaded suspect prompted a multi-agency law enforcement response Friday morning in Henderson County, leading to two arrests and the placement of a young child into protective custody.

According to the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched at approximately 9:04 a.m. Friday to a reported domestic battery in progress with possible weapons at a residence in Oquawka, a village along the Mississippi River in western Illinois.

When deputies arrived, authorities said they encountered a barricaded adult male inside the home. After negotiations, the male subject voluntarily exited the residence without incident and was taken into custody. No injuries were reported during the standoff.

A one-year-old child was removed from the residence and placed into protective custody as a precaution, officials said. The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) was notified and later arranged for the child to be placed with family members.

The sheriff’s office identified one of the arrested individuals as Joseph A. Kimbrough, 50, of Oquawka. He was charged with domestic battery and obstructing or resisting a peace officer.

A second individual, Gabriel N. Smith, 23, also of Oquawka, was arrested and charged with domestic battery, according to authorities.

The Henderson County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Warren County Sheriff’s Office, Illinois State Police, Hancock County Sheriff’s Office, Hancock/Henderson 911, the Henderson County State’s Attorney’s Office, and DCFS.

Officials noted that additional charges may still be pending as the investigation continues. All individuals involved are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Residents in Oquawka, Henderson County, and the broader western Illinois region may see an increased law enforcement presence during follow-up investigations.
