Buffalo, NY – Western New York is bracing for heavy snowfall and hazardous conditions as a lake effect snow warning remains in effect through early Saturday morning. Communities in Chautauqua and Cattaraugus counties could see accumulations of up to 22 inches in the most persistent snow bands.

The National Weather Service has warned of winds gusting up to 50 mph, creating significant blowing and drifting snow. Visibility may drop below a quarter mile, particularly along Interstate 86 and the Southern Tier Expressway. Motorists are advised to avoid unnecessary travel and prepare for rapidly changing conditions.

The combination of heavy snow and high winds is also expected to lead to power outages, with utility companies on high alert for downed lines. Residents are urged to stock up on supplies, check heating systems, and prepare for the possibility of extended outages.

As the storm moves out of the area by Saturday morning, temperatures will remain frigid, with highs in the 20s and lows dipping into the teens. Local officials remind residents to take extra precautions when traveling or working outdoors and to assist neighbors in need during this significant winter event.
