SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — Travelers across central Illinois should prepare for hazardous road conditions and plunging temperatures this weekend as a winter storm moves through the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, heavy snow is expected Saturday, especially north of Interstate 70, with rain and snow likely further south. Snowfall rates could be intense at times, reducing visibility and making travel along major corridors like I-55, I-72, and I-70 difficult through Saturday night.

By Sunday, conditions will turn sharply colder and blustery. Highs are forecast to remain in the upper 20s to low 30s, with a few lingering flurries possible. Gusty winds may cause patchy blowing snow in open areas.

Forecasters say the bitter air will deepen into early next week. Lows could fall into the teens and even single digits by Tuesday morning — the coldest readings of the season so far. A lighter round of snow is also possible Monday afternoon or Monday night.

Motorists are urged to check road conditions before traveling and to carry emergency supplies such as blankets, gloves, and a charged phone. Even short trips could become dangerous if roads ice over or visibility drops.

“Plan ahead and avoid unnecessary travel during heavy snow bands,” meteorologists warned early Friday.
