Pueblo, CO – Colorado residents face a dangerous mix of heavy snowfall, high winds, and freezing temperatures today, impacting areas near Interstate 25 and throughout the southeast plains. Officials urge caution as hazardous travel conditions are expected, especially along mountain passes where visibility may be reduced due to blowing snow and dust.

The National Weather Service issued a high wind warning effective until 6 p.m. Tuesday, with gusts reaching up to 60 mph in southeastern Colorado. The strongest winds will affect areas south of Highway 50, near the Kansas border. Along with the risk of downed trees and power outages, blowing dust may drastically reduce visibility, creating dangerous conditions for drivers. Travelers are encouraged to check road conditions on cotrip.org before heading out and avoid unnecessary travel in affected areas.

Heavy snow will continue along the Continental Divide this morning, expected to ease by the afternoon. A second round is predicted to sweep central Colorado’s mountain regions, including Pikes Peak, from tonight through Wednesday morning. The San Juan Mountains, particularly Wolf Creek Pass, will see the heaviest snowfall, making roads slick and challenging. The NWS advises residents in these areas to avoid travel if possible and be prepared for icy conditions.

Looking ahead, sub-freezing temperatures as low as 23 degrees are forecast in Pueblo County beginning Wednesday night, prompting a freeze watch that will remain in effect through Thursday morning. Residents are advised to insulate outdoor pipes and protect tender plants to prevent frost damage.

The extended forecast predicts a gradual clearing of conditions later in the week, with sunny skies and highs in the 70s by Friday. However, today and Wednesday demand heightened caution for anyone traveling or outdoors in southeastern Colorado.
