Quad Cities, Iowa/Illinois – A slow-moving storm system is expected to bring rounds of heavy rain and thunderstorms to eastern Iowa and western Illinois through Tuesday night, raising concerns over flash flooding in low-lying and urban areas.
According to the National Weather Service in the Quad Cities, rainfall rates could reach up to 1 inch per hour at times, particularly Monday night into Tuesday. The heaviest downpours are likely along a southwest-to-northeast corridor stretching from Kirksville, Missouri, through Cedar Rapids and into northwestern Illinois, including Peoria and the Quad Cities.
Localized flooding may develop quickly, especially where storms train over the same areas. Drivers in flood-prone zones along I-74, US 61, and secondary rural roads should prepare for water-covered pavement and reduced visibility. Residents are urged to avoid driving through standing water and to keep phones charged in case of power outages.
This event carries a low-end flash flood threat but could escalate if storm cells linger. Additional rain is possible later in the week, and more advisories may follow. Flood watches have not yet been issued, but updates are expected as the system evolves.
