Buffalo, NY – Western New York is bracing for a multi-day lake effect snow event beginning Monday afternoon, with significant accumulations expected in localized areas. Residents should prepare for difficult travel conditions and poor visibility during peak snowfall periods.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), snowfall will begin Monday and intensify overnight into Tuesday. Southern Erie, Wyoming, Chautauqua, and Cattaraugus counties are under a Lake Effect Snow Warning, with totals ranging from 8 to 16 inches in the most persistent bands. Winds could gust up to 35 mph, causing drifting snow and dangerous road conditions, especially on I-90 and Route 219.
The snow is expected to impact the Monday evening and Tuesday morning commutes. Drivers are urged to allow extra time, avoid nonessential travel, and stay updated on road conditions. Emergency kits with blankets, water, and a phone charger are recommended for those who must travel.
Temperatures across the region will range from the mid-20s during the day to the teens overnight. By midweek, snowfall could continue in some areas, with additional accumulations possible near the Tug Hill Plateau, though Buffalo and its southern suburbs are likely to see lighter totals by then.
This system is part of a colder pattern settling into the region for much of the week. Daily snow chances will linger through Thursday, but conditions may improve by Friday as the lake effect bands weaken.
