Heat Index Hits Dangerous Levels in Maine: Lincoln, Millinocket Among Hardest Hit Tuesday

Bangor, Maine – Life-threatening heat is bearing down on central and eastern Maine today, with feels-like temperatures expected to exceed 105°F in parts of Penobscot, Hancock, and Piscataquis counties, including Bangor and Ellsworth.

According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, an Extreme Heat Warning is in effect Tuesday for Southern Penobscot, Interior Hancock, and Central Washington counties. A Heat Advisory covers much of northern and coastal Washington, Southeastern Aroostook, and other nearby areas. Temperatures will climb into the upper 90s and low 100s this afternoon, especially south of Mt. Katahdin. The heat index may reach 109°F in Bangor and 105°F in Ellsworth.

Cities like Lincoln (101°F), Topsfield (100°F), and Millinocket (98°F) are also bracing for dangerous heat levels. Health officials urge residents to stay indoors, avoid strenuous activity, drink plenty of fluids, and check on vulnerable neighbors. Signs of heat illness include heavy sweating, nausea, confusion, and dizziness. Call 911 immediately if someone shows symptoms of heat stroke.

A cold front is expected to move through tonight, bringing isolated thunderstorms and cooler conditions by Wednesday.

Warnings remain in effect through Tuesday evening. More updates will follow if conditions worsen.
