Louisville, Kentucky – Dangerously high heat and humidity are gripping central and western Kentucky today, with heat index values peaking near 110° by mid-afternoon. An Extreme Heat Warning is in effect until 8 p.m. EDT (7 p.m. CDT), raising risks for heat-related illnesses and urging residents to stay indoors.
According to the National Weather Service in Louisville, the most intense heat will affect counties including Jefferson, Hardin, Warren, and Christian, where the combination of 100°+ air temperatures and high humidity is creating life-threatening conditions. Much of the state is also under a Heat Advisory as oppressive moisture lingers into the evening.
Residents in cities such as Bowling Green, Hopkinsville, and Elizabethtown should limit time outdoors and remain in air-conditioned spaces when possible. Local agencies are encouraging Kentuckians to drink plenty of fluids, check on elderly neighbors, and avoid strenuous activities during peak hours (2–6 p.m.).
Today’s heat ranks among the highest of the summer and mirrors late-July extremes seen in 2012 and 2021. Road crews, mail carriers, and other outdoor workers should take frequent breaks.
The heat advisory and warnings remain in effect through this evening, with additional alerts possible if the heat persists into midweek.
