Jackson, Kentucky – Relentless heat and dangerous humidity will continue gripping eastern Kentucky through Thursday evening, with maximum heat indices soaring as high as 110°F before a cold front brings welcome relief Friday.

According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, daily highs in the lower to mid-90s will feel even hotter due to stifling humidity. Many communities — including Pikeville, Hazard, London, and Jackson — will see heat indices exceeding 105°F today and Thursday, prompting increased risk for heat-related illness.

The NWS warns that the combination of intense heat and high dewpoints could make outdoor activity hazardous, especially for vulnerable groups like seniors, children, and outdoor workers. Residents are urged to stay hydrated, avoid strenuous activity during peak afternoon hours, and check on neighbors. Local cooling centers may open if conditions worsen.

Relief is in sight: a cold front pushing southward late Thursday night will gradually lower temperatures and humidity levels into the weekend. By Friday, most areas will see a return to safer conditions, with highs dipping back into the 80s by Saturday.

Warnings remain in effect through Thursday evening. Further advisories may be issued if the heat intensifies.
