Springfield, Ill. – Scorching heat and unstable skies will continue punishing central Illinois through Thursday evening, with heat indices pushing as high as 105°F and scattered storms bringing the risk of damaging wind gusts.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, a Heat Advisory remains in effect as daily highs reach the upper 90s and humidity drives heat indices into dangerous territory. Scattered thunderstorms are expected each afternoon and evening through Thursday, with isolated severe storms possible, particularly across areas including Peoria, Decatur, and Bloomington.

The Storm Prediction Center has placed much of the region under a Level 1 “Marginal Risk” for severe weather today and tomorrow, with primary hazards including wind gusts up to 60 mph, frequent cloud-to-ground lightning, and localized heavy rain.

Roads may become slick during storms, and outdoor workers or vulnerable groups should avoid prolonged heat exposure. Residents are urged to limit strenuous activity, stay hydrated, and check on elderly neighbors. Charging devices and monitoring alerts is recommended due to the storm risk.

The pattern is expected to hold through Friday, with highs staying in the mid-90s and storm chances lingering. Further watches or warnings may be issued if storms intensify.
