Jacksonville, FL – As the summer sun intensifies, residents of northeast Florida and southeast Georgia face another round of extreme heat today, with heat index values soaring to 110°F. The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory, in effect from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. EDT today, urging the public to take precautions.
According to the NWS, the combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will significantly increase the risk of heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Affected areas include cities like Jacksonville, Gainesville, and St. Augustine, along with much of the surrounding counties.
In cities like Jacksonville, the mercury will rise well into the 90s, with the added humidity making it feel much hotter. Public health officials recommend that residents drink plenty of fluids, stay indoors in air-conditioned spaces, and limit outdoor activities. Vulnerable groups, including the elderly and those with pre-existing health conditions, should take extra care and check on neighbors.
In addition, workers are advised to schedule frequent breaks in the shade or air-conditioned environments and to wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing to reduce the risk of heat stress. If you experience symptoms such as dizziness or confusion, it’s crucial to seek immediate medical attention, as heat stroke can be life-threatening.
This dangerous heat wave will last through the afternoon, with conditions expected to ease slightly by the evening. However, further advisories could be issued if conditions persist into the coming days.
