Memphis, TN – A prolonged heatwave is pushing temperatures across the Memphis region to near-record highs this week, creating sweltering conditions for residents. With daily highs predicted to soar above 80°F at multiple locations through Wednesday, officials are urging residents to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged outdoor exposure, and seek cooler environments whenever possible.
According to the National Weather Service in Memphis, daily temperatures at Memphis International Airport, McKellar-Sipes Regional Airport, and other regional locations are expected to reach the mid-80s, approaching or surpassing historical records. Today’s high is forecasted at 75°F, but by Monday and Tuesday, temperatures could climb to 84°F and 85°F respectively—remarkably high for late October. Tupelo Regional Airport in Mississippi is also predicted to see highs above 80°F this week, intensifying the broader regional heatwave.
The prolonged heatwave is driven by high pressure settling over the area, trapping warm air. Forecasts indicate slightly cooler weather may arrive by Thursday when showers and potential thunderstorms could break the heat. Still, temperatures will remain above the seasonal average, dipping only into the mid-70s as a high by the week’s end.
