Kankakee, IL – The Kankakee County Health Department reports a growing outbreak of Mycoplasma Pneumonia (M Pneumonia) across Illinois, primarily impacting young adults and school-aged children. This respiratory infection, often mild, can sometimes lead to severe symptoms. Health officials indicate that M Pneumonia causes both upper and lower respiratory infections, with about 10% of infected children developing a rash.

The health department advises that symptoms can include sore throat, cough, fever, fatigue, and headache. M Pneumonia, commonly known as “walking pneumonia,” spreads easily in communal settings, particularly schools and college campuses. While there is no vaccine to prevent M Pneumonia, health experts stress the importance of hygiene measures. Officials recommend frequent hand washing, covering coughs and sneezes, and staying home when ill to limit spread.

Health department representatives encourage residents with questions or concerns to reach out directly for guidance on managing symptoms and reducing transmission.
