Hays, Kansas – Slick travel conditions are developing across central and west central Kansas this evening as freezing fog and freezing drizzle spread across the region under a Winter Weather Advisory.

The advisory remains in effect until midnight CST tonight for Ellis, Trego, Scott, Lane, Ness, and Rush counties. Areas including Hays, Wakeeney, Scott City, Ness City, La Crosse, and Dighton are likely to see periods of freezing fog, pockets of freezing drizzle, and occasional very light snow. While snowfall amounts will be minimal, even a thin glaze of ice can create hazardous driving conditions.

According to the National Weather Service office in Dodge City, temperatures will remain at or below freezing this evening, allowing moisture to freeze on contact. Exposed surfaces such as bridges, overpasses, untreated roads, sidewalks, and parking lots are most likely to become slick. Visibility may also be reduced at times in freezing fog, especially in low-lying areas and open countryside.

Travel impacts are expected to be hit-or-miss, but conditions can change quickly over short distances. A roadway that appears wet may suddenly become icy, particularly after sunset. Drivers along U.S. 183, I-70 near Hays, and U.S. 83 should use extra caution through the late evening hours.

Officials urge motorists to slow down, increase following distance, and allow extra time to reach destinations. According to transportation officials, current road conditions can be checked by calling 511 before heading out.

Freezing fog and drizzle are expected to gradually diminish late tonight as conditions stabilize, but isolated slick spots may linger into early Sunday morning, especially on elevated surfaces.
