Honolulu, HI – A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for the Big Island summits as deep tropical moisture continues to sweep over the eastern portion of the state. The National Weather Service in Honolulu has extended the advisory through 6 p.m. Wednesday, warning that a mix of snow and rain will persist over Hawaiʻi’s highest peaks.

According to the weather service, Maunakea and Mauna Loa, which rise above 12,000 feet, may see an additional 1 to 2 inches of snow. Snowfall may mix with periods of light rain at times as moisture-rich air continues flowing over the region. Temperatures near the summits remain cold enough for intermittent winter conditions despite the tropical environment below.

The weather service cautions that the wintry mix will likely create slippery and potentially hazardous road surfaces along summit access routes, including areas managed by the Maunakea Rangers and Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. Reduced visibility is also possible during heavier shower bands.

Officials are urging drivers and summit visitors to use extreme caution. The advisory notes that winter weather at high elevations can change rapidly, especially as clouds build and winds shift. Those planning to travel near summit areas should check for road restrictions or closures before attempting to ascend.

The wintry pattern is expected to hold into Wednesday afternoon before moisture gradually shifts westward. Forecasters will continue monitoring conditions on the high peaks and may issue further updates if the weather deteriorates or accumulations increase more than expected.
