Hilo, HI – A winter weather advisory remains in effect for the Big Island summits, where snow is expected to continue through early Saturday morning. The National Weather Service issued the alert at 3:49 PM HST on Friday, warning that additional snowfall of up to two inches could accumulate in the area.
According to the National Weather Service, the slow-moving upper-level trough currently affecting the islands is bringing hazardous weather to Hawaii’s highest elevations. The advisory will remain in effect until 6 AM Saturday. Snowfall, combined with blowing snow, is expected to reduce visibility significantly, with periods of near-zero visibility making travel especially dangerous.
Drivers in the Big Island summits are advised to exercise caution due to slippery roads and poor visibility. The NWS recommends preparing for potentially difficult travel conditions, and motorists should stay alert for rapidly changing weather. As of now, no major road closures have been reported, but conditions may worsen as the snow continues.
