Honolulu, Hawaii – Strong trade winds and dangerously dry conditions have triggered a Red Flag Warning across the Hawaiian Islands, with the National Weather Service warning of extreme wildfire risk through 6 p.m. Friday.
According to the National Weather Service in Honolulu, gusts could reach 50 mph on Maui County and the Big Island, while Oahu and Kauai may see gusts topping 40 mph. Relative humidity will drop as low as 35% during afternoon hours, especially across leeward areas and Big Island’s interior, creating ideal conditions for fast-moving wildfires.
Communities from Waianae and Ewa Plain on Oahu to Lanai Leeward and South Haleakala on Maui, and Kohala and Kau on the Big Island, are all under heightened risk. Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged, and residents are urged to avoid parking vehicles on dry grass, as exhaust systems can ignite vegetation.
The warning applies to Niihau, Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Lanai, Maui, Kahoolawe, and the Big Island, especially on the dry, downwind sides of each island.
The Red Flag Warning may extend into Saturday if winds and low humidity persist. Residents should stay alert for any new fire starts and adhere to local fire restrictions.
