HILO, Hawaii – Powerful swells tied to Hurricane Kiko are set to batter east-facing shores of the Big Island through Wednesday, with forecasters warning of life-threatening surf and rip currents. Travelers on coastal routes, including Hilo Bayfront Highway, should expect hazardous conditions and avoid unnecessary trips near the shoreline.

According to the National Weather Service in Honolulu, Kiko will pass north of the islands Tuesday and Wednesday. While the hurricane itself may spare Hawaii direct impact, dangerous surf will peak by midweek. Swimmers, boaters, and beachgoers are urged to stay out of the water, as strong rip currents could overwhelm even experienced swimmers.

Hilo residents should also prepare for scattered showers and periods of heavy rain Tuesday, with chances of precipitation rising to 60%. Commuters may face slick conditions along Highway 11 and local streets during the morning and evening hours. Nighttime showers will linger, keeping roads damp and visibility reduced.

By Wednesday, the risk of scattered downpours remains high. Winds will be light and variable, but surf and rainfall could still disrupt outdoor activities and travel. Emergency officials recommend charging devices, limiting shoreline travel, and monitoring updates from the National Weather Service throughout the week.

The threat of dangerous seas will ease later this week, but unsettled weather will linger into Thursday and Friday. Showers are expected each day, keeping conditions damp across Hilo and surrounding communities.

Warnings remain in effect through Wednesday. Residents and visitors should remain alert for updates and possible advisories as conditions evolve.
