HONOLULU, Hawaii – Big Island residents are being urged to prepare for the possibility of hurricane conditions as Category 3 Hurricane Kiko moves steadily west and could impact the island by late Monday night. The system, packing sustained winds near 125 mph, is still far to the east-southeast but remains on a westward track toward Hawaii.
According to the Central Pacific Hurricane Center in Honolulu, Kiko was located Thursday evening near 13.9N, 136.2W, moving west at 9 mph with a minimum central pressure of 955 millibars. While the exact track remains uncertain, forecasters warn that hazardous conditions may reach Hawaii early next week, particularly along the Big Island’s eastern and southern shores.
Emergency officials advise residents to finalize preparations this weekend, including securing outdoor property, stocking up on food and water, and checking backup power sources. Those living in flood-prone areas should have an evacuation plan ready. Travelers should monitor airline and harbor updates, as disruptions could begin by late Monday.
Hurricane warnings are not yet in effect, but forecasters stress the potential for rapid changes. Residents across the state should continue to monitor official updates closely through the weekend.
