Honolulu, HI – The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a Red Flag Warning through 6 p.m. Saturday, citing strong winds and low humidity that could lead to rapid wildfire spread across much of Hawaii.

The warning covers leeward portions of all Hawaiian Islands, including Honolulu, Maui, Lanai, Molokai, Kauai, and the Big Island, where east winds of 20 to 35 mph are expected, with gusts up to 55 mph possible.

Forecasters say relative humidity levels could drop to near 40 percent, creating the potential for dangerous fire behavior. The greatest fire risk will occur from late morning through afternoon hours on both Friday and Saturday.

Officials are urging residents to avoid outdoor burning, secure loose materials, and report any signs of smoke immediately. Any fires that start could spread quickly under the current conditions.

The Red Flag Warning remains in effect until Saturday evening, when winds are expected to ease slightly as high pressure moves farther east of the islands.
