Honolulu, HI – A Red Flag Warning remains in effect across the Hawaiian Islands through 6 p.m. Saturday, as dry and windy conditions heighten the risk of wildfires, especially in leeward areas, according to the National Weather Service in Honolulu.
The warning covers Niihau, Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Lanai, Kahoolawe, Maui, and the Big Island, where the combination of east winds up to 35 mph and gusts near 55 mph could rapidly spread any fires that start.
According to meteorologists, the most critical period for fire danger will be Friday late morning through the afternoon, when humidity levels are expected to drop to around 40 percent. Though conditions may ease slightly Saturday, forecasters say dry air and gusty winds could persist into the weekend.
Residents in affected areas are urged to avoid outdoor burning, secure loose materials, and remain alert to fire agency updates. Any fires that develop will likely spread quickly, posing risks to nearby communities and dry vegetation zones.
The National Weather Service emphasizes that a Red Flag Warning signals conditions that could lead to extreme fire behavior, but it does not predict new fire starts.
