Honolulu, Hawaii — A Special Marine Warning is in effect early Thursday for multiple marine zones surrounding Maui County, where strong showers are producing hazardous wind and sea conditions.

According to the National Weather Service in Honolulu, the warning covers the Alenuihaha Channel, Kaiwi Channel, Pailolo Channel, Maalaea Bay, and both windward and leeward waters of Maui County. The warning remains in effect until 4:45 a.m. HST.

At 2:47 a.m. HST, radar detected a line of showers extending from 32 nautical miles northeast of FAD Buoy MM to 16 nautical miles south of FAD Buoy P, moving east at approximately 20 knots.

Forecasters warned of wind gusts reaching 40 knots, capable of producing suddenly higher waves and steep, fast-building seas. These brief but intense conditions could damage small craft and create dangerous operating conditions for mariners.

Locations potentially impacted include Laau Point, Kalaupapa, Cape Halawa, Lahaina Harbor, Shipwreck Beach, Ilio Point, Maliko Boat Ramp, and nearby offshore buoys.

The National Weather Service advises mariners to prepare for rapidly changing conditions, remain low or go below deck when possible, and ensure all passengers are wearing life jackets.

Operators in affected waters are urged to monitor NOAA Weather Radio and official National Weather Service updates for additional warnings or extensions.
